May is Speech and Hearing Awareness Month!
Speech and Hearing Awareness Month
Each year, the month of May is dedicated to raising public awareness about Speech and Hearing Loss. Two successful events were held in 2019, one at the Central Public Library on April 30th and a second Learning Fair at the Calgary City Hall on May 1st.
These events shine a spotlight on hearing health supports available in the community and together with several organizations provided information, small class training sessions, communication strategies, and free hearing screening tests.
Technology is often used to manage hearing loss and to assist with communication. Phonak representatives Tracy and Jeff have been great supporters and were happy to do a presentation on the newest cell phone app to assist with cell phone calls. The myCall-to-text app transcribes cell phone conversations. This app is free to use between cell phones who download the app, with or without hearing aids and with a verbal response. Subscription is needed to make calls to non-app users or landlines. Representatives Jeff and Tracy explained how the app works while using their Phonak, Soundfield system.
Brent Wildeman, a BC-HIS with Connect Hearing Canada, used the Roger Select Microphone to give a presentation about hearing loss and modern hearing aid technology. Hearing loss can be very subtle, so it is important to find out if your hearing is deteriorating and to learn how to manage any existing hearing loss. Brent was also able to provide short 15-minute screening tests to the public to give them an idea if they should follow-up with further testing at a hearing clinic.
We were fortunate to have other organizations support our Learning Fair at City Hall on May 1. These organizations not only brought awareness but provide supports to help people managing their hearing health, so they can learn, work and enjoy their lives to the fullest extent.
