Hearing loss may be characterized in a variety of ways. There are many different terms and phrases that are used to define the loss. When describing hearing loss, we generally look at three categories:
Type of Hearing Loss: Hearing loss can be categorized by which part of the auditory system is damaged. There are three basic types of hearing loss: Sensorineural, Conductive and Mixed.
Degrees of Hearing Loss: The degree to which an individual loses their hearing can vary widely.
Configuration of Hearing Loss: The frequencies in which an individual can lose their hearing can also vary.
There are also many other definitions and descriptors associated with hearing loss. From bilateral to unilateral, hearing loss presents differently from one individual to the next.
