Right now, there are lots of advice posts circulating about how to navigate the holidays with hearing loss. I have read great posts with some really good tips. So, of course, I am throwing my hat in the ring. But really just to say – ENJOY!
The biggest thing is just to relax. I did a sensitivity training session last week and after doing an exercise simulating hearing loss, the participants couldn’t get over how stressful it was and how hard they had to concentrate. It is tiring to have to try and catch every word. Naturally, your shoulders go up and your brow furrows.
In that instance:
- Take a breath
- Take your shoulders down
- Smile or relax your face
If you are feeling very worked up, feel free to step away for a minute. Go grab a snack or refill your glass. Politely explain why you need a breather.
Just focus on having fun. You won’t catch every single word but you’ll feel a lot better. Take it easy this year.
